Well dear readers, I am sorry it’s been awhile since I wrote anything on our blog. Travel is keeping me busy! I’ve enjoyed meeting many interesting prospective students on the road over the past several weeks. This week has thusfar been especially enjoyable because I’ve been in New York City enjoying spectacular weather, food, and of course, high schools! After a meeting at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan I enjoyed breakfast in Rockefeller Park, right on the Hudson River with beautiful views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Later I discovered another great park sort of sandwiched between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. This one had such amazing views of the city, and was totally tourist-free (yeah, two seconds after I found a relaxing bench a tour group definitely marched through Rockefeller Park and swarmed around me and my scone, taking pictures and pestering the local fisherman asking about what kind of fish he caught)! Today I had the pleasure of visiting a school right by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden–I’ve been there before and love it, and was able to sneak some peeks between fences as I walked along. Best of all, I got to spend time with family in Brooklyn, which is one perk of traveling for work. So far it has been a great week!
It’s funny traveling to schools here in New York City because people are often surprised at how close UMBC is to the Big Apple! It is strange to think that Baltimore is actually much closer to NYC than many cities in upstate New York. I keep telling folks that my record time from Baltimore to Manhattan is three hours–you can totally pull that early on a Sunday morning! Baltimore really is an ideal college town, not only because Baltimore itself is a fun, vibrant city, but because it’s so close to many other great cities like D.C., Philly, and even New York! Hopefully many of you out there will discover how exciting and colorful Balitmore is during a visit to our campus this fall. If you visit, be sure to make time in your schedule to check out Baltimore and perhaps another city or town that’s close to Charm City!
Good luck on finishing up those Early Action applications, everyone!
