  1. Hi Gary- Unfortunately UMBC does not offer a Fire Science program as part of our undergraduate studies. If you are looking for Fire Science programs in Maryland, one program I know of is with UMUC (University of Maryland, University College).
    Thanks for the comment!

  2. Hi Jeff,

You’re correct, you can mail letters of recommendation and other credentials to the following address:

  3. Hi Emilienne- At UMBC we offer a Pre-Nursing program which is basically all the pre-reqs that you need in order to apply for a nursing program. Many students in our Pre-Nursing program spend two years with us, then finish up another two years with a nursing program and earn their Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Check out the following link for more info on our Pre-Professional programs: http://www.umbc.edu/catalog/display.php?major=32

  4. hi i have another question
over the summer i wrote my essay for the honors college application about an invention that led to unexpected outcomes but now that im applying that essay isnt one of the choices…do i have to rewrite the essay?

  5. Hi Jeff- I would suspect that the topic you saw previously was from an older application. I believe that you would need to write a different essay all together. You are welcome to contact the Honors College at honors@umbc.edu, but I would imagine they would ask you to write another essay. Sorry for the inconvenience.

  6. Hi I have a question about how UMBC evaulates SAT scores? I took the SAT twice. Do they combine the scores from two different test dates to get the best scores, or is it just scores from one test date or an average of both test date scores? thank you

  7. Hi Sara! Thanks for the comment. For SAT scores, UMBC combines the highest scores from each section if you take the test more than once. It is important to keep in mind though that SAT’s are just one item taken into consideration. We attempt to look at a student’s overall academic record. Good luck with your applications!

  8. I am confused on the deadline for the Meyerhoff Scholars Application deadlines. I know the scholarship application is due on December 1 but when do I send in my admissions application?

  9. Hi Kelsey– For students who plan are applying for the Scholarship programs at UMBC it is recommended to complete your Undergraduate application by the November 1st deadline. The Scholarship applications are separate from the Undergraduate application so please note that if you are interested in the Scholarship program you must complete both the Scholarship application and the Undergraduate application.

  10. Ok… I will not be able to get the recommendations in time for the November 1st deadline so will my admissions application be evaluated as it is turned in so that I am accepted by December 1st for the Meyerhoff Scholarship?

  11. Hi Kelsey– We don’t require letters of recommendation from students so as long as your other materials are at least postmarked by November 1st then your application will be reviewed during the Early Action period.

  12. I sent in my application for early admission but was unable to get the letters of recomendation and transcript back from my school in time to send in for the November 1st deadline. Will I have to reapply or could I send the transcript and letters of recommendations in to be evaluated at a later time?

  13. I need to know who the undergraduate admissions director is because my teacher is asking for a name to send the recommendation letters to. thank you

  14. Hi Sarah- If you did not send in your credentials by November 1 you won’t need to reapply, you can simply send your transcripts and your application will be considered for the Regular Decision period.

  15. Hi i want to apply to UMBC as a transfer student this fall, but i want to make sure that the classes i am taking at UMES will be transferred and counted for and basically i need more information on the transfer process. Thank you

  16. Hi C.Isamar- As a general rule for students coming from 4-year institutions or out-of-state schools, classes typically transfer well if the course is in an academic subject taught at the 100-level or above and you earn at least a C or better. I would suggest using this guideline in conjunction with our course catalog in order to plan out your schedule in order to transfer. Thanks!

  17. Hi Michael- The Honors College has begun to notify students but the majority of their decision letters will be sent to students toward late-February. Thanks!

  18. Hello,
I’m trying to take my Meyerhoff Placement Test today and cannot creat a login with UMBC. I contacted the OIT Help desk and was told that although I am in the system, Admissions did not enter my birthdate into the system and that I cannot creat a login. OIT cannot enter the information so I now have to wait until next Monday (or Tuesday if noone is in the office on the holiday). I had set aside the whole day to do this today and will now have to wait until one day before the deadline. Is ther anyone who can resolve this before Monday? Thank you for your time.

  19. Hi Glenn- Please feel free to contact our office directly with this issue. For other student as well, I want to let you know that our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm if you need assistance.

  20. Hi-
I recently received an email from the undergraduate admissions dept. giving me a name and password for the “myumbc” account. I have been able to log on for the past week and a half or so, but now it will not allow me to log on. does this mean i was not accepted?

    Thanks

  21. Hi Shayma- The Admissions Office notifies all students of their admissions decision through the mail, not through their student account. Not being able to log-in to your MyUMBC account is most likely because the system was temporarily down. If you continue to have issues accessing your account you may contact our OIT Help Desk at 410-455-3838. Thanks!

  22. I know you have a paramedic track. But i was wondering if you had a RN certification as well. I’m looking for a college where I can double major in paramedic and RN considering they have similar core course requirements.

  23. Hi Courtney- UMBC does not offer a degree for students who are interested in becoming a nurse. We do have a pre-nursing track which allows students to take the prerequisites for a BSN program at another institution. The paramedic track that you mentioned is through our Emergency Health Services major and it is an excellent program. Many students in the EHS major graduate with over 1,000 hours of patient contact experience, which is great preparation for after they graduate. Thanks!

  24. Hello Josh;

my name is lynx. I am graduating from tri-c college in cleveland ohio. I would like to transfer to UMBC. My major is Hebrew and my second languages are: Chinese & French, my minor is astronomy.
I am also a accomplished table tennis athelete,
I have trained in china 2wice; I am also a artist all of my life. I need assitance in the transfer process and would like to visit the college.

  25. I know that the UMD application is not changing for the students applying in the fall for the fall 2010 semester. Does this apply to UMBC as well?

    • Hi Neena- Our Fall 2010 application will be available in August. If any major changes are made to the application we will post an update here on the Counselors’ blog before August. Thanks!

  26. Hi,

I’m having some trouble with the online application. It only allows me to choose “Spring 2010” for the enrollment. I want to apply for Fall 2010 enrollment. What do I need to do to get this option to display?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Anita- The Fall 2010 application will be online within the next few weeks. If you would like to get started with the essay you can view the PDF version of the application that is currently online. Thanks!

  27. Hi, I am trying to apply for Fall 2010 early action, but on the online application it does not have early action or fall 2010 listed. Could you please help me?

    • Hi Paola- The Admissions Office does not conduct interviews for admissions purposes but if you would like to speak to an Admissions staff member about your application our office is open Mon-Fri from 8:30am-4:30pm. Thanks!

    • Hi Dan- You are welcome to contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at 410-455-2292 and ask to speak with either the on-call Admissions staff member or you may ask for our Visual Arts Admissions Counselor. We would be happy to help you through the process or connect you with someone from Visual Arts. Thanks!

  28. Hi! I was wondering if my math section is not the greatest on the SAT.. Would UMBC consider the SAT II subject test in mathematics? Also, I want to apply for early admission but I still want to take my SATs I or II (again for the SAT I)in December. Will it still be consider since I submitted it in for the November deadline?

    • Hi Vivian- The Admissions Office does not use the SAT II subject tests for admissions consideration. If you are taking the SAT I again in December we will not be able to consider those scores for your Early Action application. However, if you are not admissible during Early Action your application will automatically be deferred to Regular Decision, and in that case we can consider your December scores for the Regular Decision period. Thanks.

  29. Could someone kindly send me the link for the early admissions application forms for the “Visual Arts” under graduate program?

  30. Hello, I will be applying for transfer to UMBC next fall and was curious as to how my GPA will be transfered over. Also, does UMBC calculate all classes taken or just the ones used toward my degree. Thanks so much!

    • Hi Chris- The GPA that you have from your previous college coursework will not transfer to UMBC. Your UMBC GPA will be a reflection of the work that you do at UMBC. Also, when the Admissions Office is calculating a GPA for an admissions decision we use all classes you have taken. Thanks!

    • Hi Gabrielle- The system may have been temporarily down when you attempted to access the link. If you continue to have issues please feel free to contact our office at 410.455.2292. Thanks!

  31. Hello! I am applying online.Does my counselor need to fill out any part of the appplication other than to send transcrpits?

    • Hi Georgella- Your counselor is not required to complete any additional information but if you would like we do accept a maximum of two letters of recommendation, and those can come from teachers or counselors. Thanks!

  32. Hi,

I’m going to apply Early Action to UMBC, however I took the October SATs, and did not indicate to have the scores send to UMBC. Can I still send them to UMBC for consideration with Early Action? Should I choose to send them with rush delivery, so that they get there in 1-2 business days?

    Thanks,

    Dennis

    • Hi Dennis- If you requested that your scores be sent rush delivery we should be able to consider them with your Early Action application. Just a reminder, students will receive an email about how to check the status of their application about 2 weeks after an application is submitted. Thanks!

  33. Hello! I applied to UMBC about two weeks ago (I applied to the honors college), but had sent my transcripts earlier during November. Now on my online status, it says my transcript is still initiated, so I am guessing that it is not matched with my application yet. Is it a problem that I sent my transcript early? Is there anything I should do in this situation, or should I wait more?

    • Hi Ioannis- It isn’t a problem that you submitted your transcripts before your application. There is a delay in processing applications due to the quantity we receive this time of year so please allow more time for your checklist to be updated. Thanks!

  34. Hi Josh,
I’m a student at Northern Virginia Community College, and I’m also interested to transfer to UMBC in the Fall 2010.I just have one quick question that do i need to include the essay that require for all freshman in my application?
thanks a lot and have a wonderful day!

    • Hi Ngoc- Transfer students are not required to submit an essay with their application but they are certainly welcome to do so if they would like.

      • Thanks for a quick responding!
Just one more question, I just submitted an application and they did not require me to pay a nonrefundable fee, $50 since I’m a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Really? Do I have to pay it some how lata?

      • Hi Ngoc- If a transfer student is a member of Phi Theta Kappa they are not required to pay the application fee. However, we do ask that you submit proof of membership in PTK to our office. Thanks!

  35. hello,as a transfer student, do have to include an essay that require for all freshman in my application? do a transfer student who include the essay will have better change than the others who dont?
    thanks

    • Hi Jenny- Please also see my comment above but transfer students are not required to submit an essay with their application. Some transfer students choose to use the essay to talk about their education goals but if you do not include an essay that is perfectly okay. Thanks!

  36. I sent my application as a transfer student about 2 weeks ago. I just received a letter of acceptance for Phi Theta Kappa. I did not know about this before and was wondering if sending proof of membership would be beneficial at all at this point (since I already sent in my application).

    • Hi Joanna- I would recommend sending a copy of your PTK acceptance letter or a copy of the award because as a transfer student you can be considered for the PTK Transfer Scholarship if you are a member. Transfer students who apply by March 15 (transfer priority deadline for the Fall) will receive priority consideration for our transfer scholarships (http://www.umbc.edu/financialaid/scholar_transfer.html).

  37. I need to apply for readmission. My question is, do I need to fill out the whole application available online even though I am not on academic probation?

  38. …There are forms to provide a ”plan of action” and express my ”academic difficulties” and so on which do not apply to me.

  39. My daughter is interested in applying for early decision for the academic year of 2011. If accepted, is this binding? We are concerned about the financial aid package.

We have already attended the tour this past month. However, we have many questions which include information regarding the honors program. Would it be possible to set up a meeting?

    Lenora

    • Hi Lenora,

UMBC offers an Early Action deadline which differs from Early Decision programs at other schools in that it is non-binding. The advantage of applying to UMBC during our Early Action program is that students admitted during that period received priority consideration for merit-based scholarships and those students hear back from our office early (typically in late-December). The application for the Fall 2011 term will be available online in late-August of this year.

Also, appointments are not necessary to speak with an admissions staff member. Walk-in appointments are available and our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30an to 4:30pm.

      Thanks!

  40. Hello UMBC Counselors,

My question may have been answered above, but it is a long list of replies and I did not read them all! I am interested in returning to school. I graduated from UMBC with a psych degree last year in the Spring of 2009, but I am thinking about taking a different path. If I were to re-enter an undergraduate program, would I be able to apply my general requirement credits from my first degree to my second, and only do the credits for the second major? Or would I have to take another 120 credits for the second bachelor’s? Thanks so much for your help!

    • Hi Catie,

Please see the following link related to degree requirements: http://www.umbc.edu/catalog/pages/requirements.html

From the link: “Students who have graduated and wish to complete an additional degree program are required to complete all requirements of the additional degree program and a minimum of 30 additional degree credits.”

      Thanks!

  41. Hi I was wondering what exactly students are tested for in the mathematics section of the placement tests. I know there’s a couple algebra sections but for the calculus readiness part, is there mostly pre-calculus or calculus thats being tested? Thanks!

    • Hi Lakshmi,
The UMBC application for the Fall 2011 semester will be available online in late-August. UMBC will also be using the Common Application for the Fall 2011 term and our Common App supplement will be available mid-August. Thanks!

  42. Hey!! I am going to apply Early Action for the Fall 2011 school year. I was wondering…if i sent in my SAT scores from collegeboard on October 29th, (That’s when they will be available to us) will the admissions office receive them in time by November 1st? I would really like to know seeing as I’m in need of a Merit Scholarship from UMBC. Thanks!!

    • Hi Tashe’
In the past we have typically been able to consider October test scores for Early Action applicants. However, since the scores arrive after November 1 we cannot give an absolute guarantee that we can use the scores to consider an application complete for Early Action application period. What I would suggest in order to have the scores arrive to our office as soon as possible would be to include UMBC as a listed school when you take the SAT exam. Our CollegeBoard code is 5835.

  43. Hi. I just need to know whether or not the early decision application for umbc is binding. If it is not, then I can decline the acceptance if necessary, right???

    • Hi Christiana,
UMBC offers an Early Action application period which is non-binding. Schools that have binding application periods will often refer to those application deadlines as “Early Decision” while schools that have non-binding deadlines like UMBC use the phrase “Early Action.”

  44. I am intrested in playing tennis for UMBC of fall 2011. I am a pretty good player I play number 2 in high school and a bunch of other tennis legues. Ive also worked with coach hubbard . When you apply how do you stress and find out when tennis stuff starts?

    • Hi Erica,

If a student is interested in playing for one of our Division I teams we suggest they contact our coaches through the sports website: http://www.umbcretrievers.com/

Through the website you can find a prospective student athlete inquiry form as well as email addresses for the coaches.

  45. Hi,

I tried applying online for the Fall 2011 term, but the site still says

“There are currently no additional terms for which you may apply to Application for Admission. You may still fill out the form, but you will not be able to submit the form until a term becomes available.”

and does not give an option to submit the application. When will I be able to submit?

    Thank you,

    • Hyo,

If you are applying to UMBC through our website for the Fall 2011 term the application will be available in the next 2 weeks. Once the Fall 2011 application is live you will be able to select that term to submit your application.

UMBC also uses the Common Application, which is available online for the Fall 2011 semester.

As a reminder, our Early Action deadline for the Fall 2011 term is November 1, 2010. Good luck working on your applications!

    • Hi Yannan,
If you are applying for the Fall 2011 semester and meet the November 1 Early Action deadline you can expect to hear back from our office in late-December.
If you are a transfer student applying for the Spring 2011 term and meet the November 1 Priority deadline you can expect to hear from our office 2-3 weeks from the time your application becomes complete in our office.
      Thanks!
      Josh

  46. I was planning on applying on line by Nov. 1st. I went and printed out the questions for the essays from the PDF file so I could have a hard copy. On the PDF form it says that the essay needs to be a minimum of 250 words. So I wrote my essay and it is almost 600 words as it did not have a limit. As I go to paste it in my online application it says that the essay should be 200-350 words. Should I not send this essay online as it is over the number of words they say it should be? It does fit in the box they provide but I don’t want to put it in there because it is going against what the guidelines says. So my question is should I just fill out a paper application and send it in with my essay since there is no limit there?

    • Hi Christopher,
We do ask that students limit their essays to within our provided range; however, if you have already written your essay for UMBC there is no need to rewrite the essay, you can submit what you have. If it is at all possible to edit the essay to fewer words please do so, but since you’ve already written your essay don’t worry that it is a bit long. Thanks!

  47. In regards to the UMBC supplement for the Common Application, did the Honors College section change?
A month ago I printed out a copy of the section and it said “Characters available 1000” for each essay and it didn’t specify to choose one, so I did both. I checked the supplement again today and it says “Characters available 1700” and “Please answer ONE of the following:”.

    • Hi Kathy,
The Honors College did make changes to their application but we would ask that you contact the Honors College directly to see which application they prefer that you complete. The Honors College can be contacted at honors@umbc.edu or 410-455-3720. Thanks!

  48. Hello, I am applying to UMBC for early action. Are the 3 paragraphs for Intersts and Activities section required for students who are not applying to Honors College?

The three paragraphs are included in the supplements in Common Application, but it is says those paragraphs are only for students applying to Honors College on the website. However, if I don’t submit them, I cannot complete the supplements or submit my application.

    Thank you for your time!

    • The short answer questions about Interests and Activities you are referring to are part of the Honors College application. They are not required unless you are completing the Honors College application. If you answered “Yes” to being interested in the Honors College you will need to complete the Honors essays and short answer questions in order to submit your application. If you are interested in the Honors College but wish to submit your Honors application at a later date you should answer “No” (to being interested) on your online application. You can then find the Honors application online: http://www.umbc.edu/undergraduate/pdf/honors_app.pdf

  49. Hi,
I applied to UMBC through the Common App in November, but received no response from the school saying that they received the application. Should I just reapply through the UMBC website? Or does this school just not send out confirmation e-mails?
    Thanks!

    • Hi Rachel,
You should NOT complete both of the applications UMBC offers. If you are not sure if UMBC has received your Common Application you can log-in to your Common App account to verify that you have successfully submitted all parts of your application and UMBC has printed your application. You are also welcome to contact our office (410.455.2292) to verify that your application was received.

    • Hi Busayo,
The Meyerhoff Scholars Program is not binding. If you are offered admission to UMBC and the Meyerhoff program you are not required to attend.

  50. Hi Josh,

I was wondering if scholarship information has been sent out yet? How will I know if my daughter will be offered a scholarship? She applied early decision and was accepted and we are now waiting to hear about merit scholarship.

    Thanks,
    Debbie

    • Hi Debbie,
Merit-based scholarship offers are typically sent to students about 3-4 weeks after an admissions letter. Merit-based scholarship offers are highly competitive; last year the average GPA of students offered a merit award was 3.8 and the SAT scores typically started around 2000 on all three sections. If your daughter has questions about merit-based scholarships she can certainly contact our Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at 410.455.2387.

    • Hi Donta,
If you’re asking about how long after a student applies before they receive a decision from our office it does depend on what type of an applicant the student is (FRS or TRN), as well as when the student applies. Fall 2012 Early Action applicants can expect to hear from our office in late-December and Fall 2012 Regular Decision applicants will begin hearing from our office in late-February.

    • Hi Donta,
Spring 2012 decisions are typically received by a student about 2-3 weeks after an application becomes complete within our office. The earliest we begin releasing spring decisions is typically late-October. Busy times of the semester (around deadlines and during our winter break) may cause decisions to take longer to arrive to a student.

  51. The website says the UMBC supplement was to come out in mid-August. I just checked the Common App and it isn’t up yet. Should I wait or should I try to apply on the UMBC website?

    Thanks,

    Dee

    • Hi Dee,
The Common Application required some last minute changes of the UMBC supplement which caused a delay in the release. However, we expect the supplement to be available in 1-2 weeks. The UMBC supplement does not ask for a lot of additional information so it shouldn’t take you long to complete once it is available. You should use the Common Application ONLY to apply to UMBC for the spring 2012 or fall 2012 terms. Thanks for your patience!

  52. The Meyerhoff Scholarship requires 2 teacher recommendations. I sent in 2 teacher recommendations with my early decision application. Will these be given to the Meyerhoff Scholarship to consider, should I send them to the scholarship program as well, or should I get two new people to recommend me?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Diana,
Letters of recommendation for the scholars programs should be sent along with your scholars program application. If the letters you sent with your Undergraduate application are applicable to your scholars program application you can use the same letters but you will need to send additional copies with your scholars program application.

  53. Hi,

My son’s teachers and school counselor provided letters or recommendations in sealed envelopes. I do not believe that they used the Common Application forms.

Is this acceptable? Can we mail their letters with our application packet or do they have to be mailed separately?

Finally, if they mail them separately, should they arrive by November 1 as well?

    Thank you

    Mrs. Mimms

    • Hi Yvette,
While we ask students to submit as much of their application as possible online through the Common Application it is okay if something is mailed. If something is mailed it simply needs to be post-marked by November 1 to meet the Early Action deadline.

  54. Thanks Josh. Is it okay if they did not use the Teacher Evaluation Common Application form and just prepared a letter?

    • That would be fine, Yvette. As long as the letter contained the student’s name it will be matched with their application.

    • Hi Emily,
Such a change seems unnecessary since Early Action is non-binding, and if you’re not admitted during Early Action your application is simply deferred to Regular Decision. If you have questions about the application periods you can also contact our office.
      Thanks.

    • Hi Lucy,
UMBC offers a pre-nursing program. This program is a student’s first two years of study preparing them to apply to a nursing school. After the student goes to a nursing school they complete another two years in order to earn a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Additional information on the courses for the pre-nursing program can be found here: http://www.umbc.edu/catalog/display.php?major=32

  55. Hi, I am wondering can you do a double major in nursing and paramedics. So far i haven’t found a place where you can do that double major.

    • Hi Annie,
UMBC offers both a Pre-Nursing program and an Emergency Health Services major. Pre-Nursing is only two years at UMBC and then a student finishes their last two years at a nursing school to earn their degree. However, our Emergency Health Services program (which contains a paramedic track) is a degree program at UMBC. More information on EHS can be found here: http://ehs.umbc.edu/undergrad

  56. Hi, I wanted to know if I register for Regular Decision and take the SAT again in January, will that score be considered for my admission or would it be too late? The January test date is on the 28th but then the applications are due by February 1st, and since SAT scores don’t come out for about 2-3 weeks, i thought it might be too late.

    • Hi Seo,
It is likely that we will review your Regular Decision application before we have your January scores but if we had any concerns about your test scores we will wait until we have your January SAT before making a decision on your application.

  57. Hi,
I am interested in applying for the Meyerhoff Scholars program which has a deadline of December 1st. However, I was planning to submit my reg. admissions application as well but need to have my teacher recommendations completed. Is it possible for me to send the application prior to receiving my teacher recommendation and allow the teacher to send them separately to avoid missing the December 1st deadline?

    • Hi Cottrell,
For the undergraduate freshmen application it is certainly fine if your letters of recommendation are sent separate from your application (although we do prefer that the letters are submitted electronically using the Common Application). For your Meyerhoff application, simply make sure all part of your application are post-marked by December 1.

  58. Hello, My name is Anita and i was wondering if the common app is the only way to apply to UMBC or is there a separate application. If you could be able to help me i would gladly appreciate it. Thank You .

  59. Hello,
I was wondering if it was possible for regular decision applicants to receive merit-based scholarships and if so, does the applicant have to do anything extra to receive one? For example, filling out an application or form?

    • Hi Simon,
It is possible for a Regular Decision applicant to be awarded a merit-based scholarship. Early Action applicants receive priority consideration for merit-based scholarships, but if additional scholarship reviews occur after Early Action then Regular Decision applicants can be considered. No additional steps need to be taken for a student to be considered for our general merit-based scholarships.

  60. Hi, my name is Pranesh. I have been admitted into UMBC through Early Action. I was wondering when I will be notified of merit scholarship decisions. Will I be able to see if I have been awarded in my myUMBC account or do I have to wait for a letter through mail? How much percent of Early Action admits actually get scholarships?

    Thanks

    • Hi Pranesh,
The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is preparing to mail the first round of scholarship offers soon. Letters are only sent to students being awarded scholarships, and those letters should arrive to students in early-February. Scholarship offers are only sent via postal mail, and as I mentioned, scholarship notifications are only sent to students being offered a scholarship.

  61. Hi,
I recently received the Academic Enhancement Award. I was wondering what this scholarship is and is this the only merit scholarship I will receive?

    • Hi Morgan,
Congrats on being offered a scholarship from UMBC. It sounds like you received one of our general merit-based scholarships. Students are automatically considered for our merit-based scholarships when they apply, and priority is given to Early Action students. To be considered for need-based financial aid (loans, grants, etc.) you will need to submit a FAFSA to UMBC by February 14.

  62. Hi, I just got accepted to UMBC as a transfer student. What if I want to drop one class in this sesmester at Montgomery College, which leads me from full-time to part-time student. Is there any effect on my acceptance to UMBC, or any thing else?
    Thank you so much.

    • Hi Thienan,
Dropping one course won’t necessarily affect your admission offer but we do expect that you’ll continue to be successful in the remaining classes in which you’re enrolled. Offers of admission are contingent on maintaining strong grades for the remainder of your semester.

    • Hi Bryan,
The intended major a student lists on his or her application does not affect our decision during the admissions review. Because of this, we do not have specific admissions prerequisites in place for applicants.

  63. Hi,
I’d like to know if there is any prerequisites for biological science major or not. I could not find any info about it in the website, and I am getting my associate in summer from Montgomery College if i don’t have all of the prerequisites can i still apply for this coming fall entrance?

    • Hi Nadia,
When students apply to UMBC they are not applying toward their specific major (unless the student wishes to major in Visual or Performing Arts areas, then a separate application is required for those programs). If you have not taken certain courses related to your major you can still apply for admission to UMBC. If you are then admitted you can take your major related courses at UMBC.

  64. Hi Josh,

The Common Application asks for two recommendations, both from teachers who taught me an academic subject. Is music considered an academic subject? If not, which subjects does the term “academic” encompass? I am a homeschooled student and have had few teachers outside my home to consult for recommendations.

Also, when will the application forms be released for Fall 2013 enrollment?

    Thanks!

    • Hi SH,
You’re certainly welcome to have a letter of recommendation sent from a music instructor or teacher. The Common Application for the spring 2013/fall 2013 term will be available August 1.

  65. Hi Josh…I have another question.

Is the Home School Supplement to the Common Application the same thing as the required homeschool curriculum vitae?

    Thanks again!

  66. I was wondering how you prefer receiving fee waivers. Do you require them to be sent from the counselor or the applicant? And must they be mailed, or can they be scanned and emailed? Thanks!

    • Hi Tasneem,
Fee waivers can be scanned and added as an additional document to your Common Application, or you can mail the fee waiver. If mailed, the waiver can be sent from the student or counselor.

  67. I noticed that the application to the honors college isn’t due till January 15 but the application seems attached to the common application. If I am applying for early action but would like to submit an honors college application after the early action deadline, would that be allowed and how would I do so?

    • Hi Calvin,
You can separately submit the Honors College application if you need you need additional time to complete the application required for the Honors College. If you decide you need to submit the Honors College application later, you will need to print a copy of the Honors College application from the website.

  68. I cannot submit my suppliment for the application and the school is closed. Will the deadline be extended due to the storm?

    • Hi Heather,
Your Common Application, including the supplement, should be submitted electronically. However, because we understand that inclement weather caused by Hurricane Sandy may cause delays in ability to submit the application, we have extended our November 1 deadline by one week. The information about our extended deadline is also in my blog post today.

  69. I have finished the UMBC application for early action for the fall 2013 term. On the myUMBC page it is logged with a green circle. So I am assuming my application is complete, but I never received a confirmation email regarding the supplement or application fee. I have the one for the common app but on that one it says I still need to submit the supplement and fee. Does the myUMBC application status symbol overrule the two missing emails?

    • Hi Andrew,
If you received the confirmation email from UMBC with your myUMBC information, then all parts of your Common Application were successfully submitted to UMBC. If you did not receive the emails from Common App, I suppose it is possible the emails ended up in your Spam box, or there was simply an error. However, UMBC does not download an application (and therefore would not send the email with myUMBC account information) unless all three sections of the application have been successfully submitted.

      • I did receive the email with myUMBC account information, ID and login link and it is titled “Undergraduate Application Acknowledgement”. I just never received separate emails regarding the supplement and payment.

  70. Hello,
I am applying for the Fall 2012 semester. I already have a Bachelors and Masters degree, but want to change my career path and apply for a Bachelors. Which application should I use, regular or transfer? And is it possible to transfer any of my classes from my previous degrees?

  71. I heard today that some people checked myUMBC and found out they were admitted into UMBC today. I checked but my status just said “completed”, does that mean that i might have been declined or deferred?

    • Hi Ivy,
Our official method of notifying students of their admissions decision is through the letter we mail. If you’ve not already received a letter it should arrive to you soon.

  72. I have heard today that some people have checked their myUMBC accounts and found out that they were accepted. I checked my account and all it says is complete.

    • Hi Elizabeth,
You will only be prompted with a writing supplement from UMBC if you select that you are interested in applying for the Honors College program. Our undergraduate admissions application only requires the main essay from the Common App, we do not have an additional writing supplement for the admissions application.

    • Hi Laura,
We will be sending our confirmation email to applicants soon, as we’ve only recently downloaded Common Apps. Just make sure you’ve done your due diligence to have all parts of your applicant submitted to UMBC, including supporting documents. After we send the confirmation email there will still be processing time, so the application status you’ll see in your myUMBC account may not be up-to-date. You’ll want to allow some processing time for items to be matched with your application, and we appreciate your patience.

  73. What is the address to send in the high school transcripts for the Fall of 2014 admission?
And if my transcript is sent in late or is stuck in the mail would that send my application to regular deadline instead of early action deadline?

    • Hi Rohankumar,
It would be our preference that your transcript be submitted electronically via the Common App, but if it must be mailed it can be sent to the following address:
      UMBC
      Office of Undergraduate Admissions
      1000 Hilltop Circle
      Baltimore, MD 21250

To be considered on-time, the transcript must be postmarked by November 1, it does not need to arrive to our office by November 1.

  74. Hi – I was completing the common application and under the UMBC general questions I had at first selected yes that I would like to apply for the honors college yet the day after I decided not to so I changed my answer to no. The writing supplement for the honors program still has a tab yet the questions do not show up and it says I have to complete the supplement. What do I do?

    • Hi Mina,
Since the writing supplement is used only for consideration for the Honors College program, an incomplete writing supplement will not affect the review of your Undergraduate admissions application. If something is preventing you from submitting your application for admission, I would suggest using the Help Center of the Common App to send a help ticket (under Ask a Question).

  75. Hi Josh,

I am a transfer student from Montgomery College. I submitted my application for UMBC through The Common Application on October 17, 2013 for spring 2014 semester admissions. I acknowledge the priority deadline was November 1, 2013. However, on my application, it says that my admission plane is Regular Decision. Even though my application says Regular Decision, will my application be counted as a Priority because I had everything turned in before November 1, 2013? Thanks Josh!

    Kathleen

    • Hi Kathleen,
For transfer students the only application option is Regular Decision, but submitting the application before November 1 means that your application will be considered for the priority deadline.

  76. Hi! I submitted my application and everything, but on the side where there is the To Do list, it lists High School Transcript and Honors essay and app as “initiated”. What does this mean?

    Thanks

    • Hi Yuna,
You likely see items listed as ‘initiated’ on your online checklist because we are still processing your application. Given the volume of applications and supporting documents we receive this time of year we ask that you allow at least two weeks (from the time you receive your confirmation email) for your application items to be processed and your online checklist to be updated. If after the first two to three weeks of November you still see an item listed as ‘initiated,’ we may not have received that item, and we would ask that you reach out to our office. However, at this point there is no need to stress about the items on your checklist since we are still processing your application.

  77. Hi,
I got my acceptance letter in the mail today, and was wondering when we will know about admissions into the Honors College?
    Thank you!

    • Hi Meryl,
Congrats on your acceptance! Since the staff in the Honors College reviews after we’ve completed our Early Action review, the Honors College will begin releasing decisions in mid-to-late January.

  78. Hello there i am applying to UMBC and I cannot find the recommendation forms for a freshman undergraduate can you please link me to the forms or just send them to me please.

    • Hi Evan,
Letters of recommendation can be submitted electronically via the Common App. When completing the recommendation section of the Common App, you will enter the name and contact information for the person writing your letter. This will then result in that person receiving an email with a link to submit your letter.
      Thanks!

  79. I am looking for information on visiting your campus. Do you have any open house events planned for spring? please let me know how I am set up an appointment to visit the school. thank you

    • Hi Michelle,
We offer our Black and Gold Tours throughout the year, which includes an information session with a member of the Admissions staff followed by a walking tour of the campus. Our next open house will be during the summer, and we’ll offer additional open house programs during the fall.
To register for a visit, please see the following link: http://undergraduate.umbc.edu/visit/index.php

    • Hi Jenni,
An appointment is not necessary in order to speak with our admissions counseling staff. We have walk-in appointments available and our office is open Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. In addition to walk-in appointments, we also offer our Black and Gold Tours throughout the year: http://undergraduate.umbc.edu/visit/index.php
