Retriever Fever!

Happy Homecoming Week!

One of the most popular questions I get out on the road is “How is UMBC’s football team?”  Well, I hate to break it to ya- we don’t have one  But that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a Homecoming- in fact, it is happening this week! (That’s right, it’s more than just a weekend at UMBC!).

So if we don’t have a football team, how do you have a homecoming game you may ask?  Well UMBC does have a pretty good soccer team.  In case you didn’t know, the UMBC men’s soccer team won the America East title last year, which earned them a bid to the NCAA tournament.  We beat Princeton in the first round, but lost to William & Mary in the second round in PKs.  None the less, we did have one player drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia Union.  This year, the men’s team will be taking on the University of New Hampshire Friday night at 7:00.  The game will be nationally televised, so check your local listing!

In addition to the soccer game, there are going to be tons of other events happening on campus!  Everything from our parade, to bonfire, to pictures with True Grit, the UMBC mascot.  All events will conclude on Saturday night with a Comedy Night featuring Donald Glover from NBC’s “Community” and the annual Homecoming Dance.  For the complete schedule of events, check out the Homecoming Website!

UMBC Homecoming

This week’s Insights Weekly contained an announcement for UMBC’s Homecoming on October 15-18 so save the date!  Here are the details:

Homecoming – Retriever Fever (10/15-18)
Save the date for UMBC’s annual Homecoming celebration. This year’s theme is “Retriever Fever” and will be October 15-18. The lineup of events includes a campus bonfire, a student talent show, athletic alumni games and a 5K “Dawg Chase” around Hilltop Circle, a tailgate lunch and family activities, a men’s soccer game against Longwood University, an honors college reception, basketball’s annual “Midnight Madness,” a performance by comedian Demetri Martin and plenty more. If your department or program would like to include an event on the homecoming calendar, contact Stanyell Bruce in Alumni Relations at bruce@umbc.edu by August 10. Note that suggested available time frames to host events are: Thursday, October 15, 5-7 p.m., and Saturday, October 17, 2-6:30 p.m.
