Go Dawgs!!

With a month to go before March Madness (one of my personal favorite times of the year!), I thought an update on UMBC athletics would be fitting. To start off, our Men’s Basketball team is currently sitting in first place of the America East Conference!! The Retrievers recently battled two-time defending conference champion Albany to a 69-65 win before upsetting Vermont by a score of 75-73. Also, junior point guard Jay Greene earned America East’s player of week. Next up is StonyBrook on Wednesday, February 6 at 7:00 pm in the RAC. It’s also “RAC in Black” night with free t-shirts for all current UMBC students! Hopefully the men’s basketball team can carry their momentum all the way through conference playoffs. I personally would love to see UMBC in the March Madness brackets. 🙂

Unfortunately, our defending America East Conference champion women’s basketball team is not faring as well as the men in the America East. But, as you may or may not remember, the women’s basketball team went in to the America East Playoffs last year as the seventh seed. So, don’t write these girls off yet. The team only has four returning players from last year’s championship team, but I don’t doubt the returning four’s leadership skills and ability to relay to their fellow teammates the feeling of winning a championship. It should be exciting to see how the rest of their season pans out.

Aside from basketball, UMBC’s swimming and diving team is about to participate in the America East Conference Championships at the University of Maine (brrrr!). The Championships take place February 14 to February 17. Both the men and women swimming and diving teams are defending America East Conference Champions, and we expect more of the same this year! This season has already made history, as both the men and women’s swimming and diving teams beat state rival University of Maryland, College Park. Best of luck at AEC’s (America East Championships)!!

Well, that pretty much sums it up for the winter sports. But, some spring sports are already underway. Track and field’s Alex Hyland was recently named ECAC Athlete of the Week (woohoo!) and the men’s tennis team just beat Boston University in a conference match-up. Women’s lacrosse starts their season this Saturday (February 9), men’s lacrosse and softball begin February 16, and baseball kicks-off on the 29th of February.

There is definitely plenty going on in the world of UMBC athletics. To stay up-to-date, please visit the new and improved athletics website: http://www.umbcretrievers.com And if you’re in the area, come out and support your favorite team!!

Go Dawgs!!
