Brand Spankin’ New

There is a chill in the air, and Fall has definitely made its way to Baltimore.  I love this time of year.  The smell of the cool crisp air, the warm, comfy clothing, and all the colors!  I do love those colors.  Along with this chill, new and exciting things have come.  For the Fall 2011 semester, the Visual Arts department at UMBC has introduced a brand new Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree called “Intermedia“.

Wait a minute!  BFA?  What is the difference between a BFA and a Bachelor of Arts (BA)?  If you are going for a BFA, you will be taking a smaller number of general electives and more specific art courses.  If you are headed the BA route, you will be taking a greater number of general elective courses.  It really just depends what your focus is.  However, if you’re interested in majoring in Intermedia, you will be working on a BFA degree.

Back to this Intermedia situation.  What it is to be earning the Intermedia degree: students are given the “…freedom to craft their own path within the Visual Arts Department, allowing for breadth while also requiring depth and mastery in more than one area of emphasis.”  This is a major for students that “…wish to develop skills in a variety of areas.”  Students choose from 4 out of the 5 concentrations: Animation/Interactive Media, Cinematic Arts, Graphic Design, Photography, and Print Media.

So for those of you who can not make up your mind or just love everything, you have something new to think about.  Oh, the possibilities!
