So you’re an admitted student, now what?

I remember those pre-college jitters: Will I make the right choice? How do I know which school is right for me? Although my choice was relatively easy at the time, I know there are many of you starting to receive letters from several institutions and the choices you make are monumental. Why not be proactive and get the facts to help you make the best choice for YOU!

In the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, we try to help students with that decision making process. This time of year, everyone in the office is busy working on projects, speaking with students and their families, and getting ready for our annual Spring events. New Student Day (Saturday, April 13th!!) is a wonderful day for admitted students to learn more and get excited about UMBC before finalizing the decision by May 1st! Your day will start off with a continental breakfast and a Campus Activity Fair, which I began planning a few weeks ago. We already have several clubs and organizations enthusiastic to teach to you more about how they keep active in the UMBC community! The rest of the day is scattered with special presentations on topics of interest including: “The Shriver Center,” where students learn how our nationally recognized Shriver Center prepares students for real world internships, cooperative education and community service, and “Getting Your Dream Job After UMBC,” learning how your UMBC experience will prepare you for a wonderful career after graduation! Other topics cover: financing your education, honors college, international experiences, campus living, athletics, student life, meet and greets with the Deans of UMBC, and more! Join us for this event, book a Black and Gold tour (http://www.umbc.edu/undergraduate/visit/) or call our office to speak with one of our wonderful counselors!

  1. Approximately how many students apply for the Scholars Programs (i.e. Humanities Scholars)?

    • Dear Celeste,

We do not review applicants for the Scholars Programs, please refer to the Humanities Scholars website for more information. You will also find contact information located on their website as well: http://humanitiesscholars.umbc.edu/

  2. Hi!
When do scholarship decisions and financial aids come out?
Also, if we apply for the housing, we don’t have to pay our deposit fee for the school yet right?

    • Dear Elizabeth,

Both these questions will need to be directed to different departments on campus. For more information about scholarships and financial aid, please contact the financial aid office: 410-455-2387. For information about housing, please contact res life at 410-455-2591.

      Best,
      Hollin

  3. Will admitted students be receiving more information about the Admitted Students Day, April 13th, in the mail or online?? I can’t find anything about it on the UMBC website.

    • Dear Kelly,

Invitations for Freshman and Transfer Admitted students were sent out on March 15th. Please email me directly at hroberts@umbc.edu if you have not received an invitation in the mail and we can send you a new one or get you the specific information!

      Best,
      Hollin

  4. I have not received a decision from UMBC yet. Should I call them up or should it be arriving in the mail ?

    • Dear Luz,

Thank you for your question. Your application is under review, it looks like we just received some of your supporting documents. Please allow a few weeks for us to get our decisions out. If you have any concerns at that time, please email me at hroberts@umbc.edu. Thank you!

      Best,
      Hollin
