The shining sun and cool air greeted our students on their first day of classes, today. Winter break has ended and it is time for our old and new students to get started on their next semester.
Although classes are back in session, that doesn’t mean the fun of winter break has ended. We kick off each semester with Welcome Week. Welcome week is filled with games, activities, and socials so our new students can get acclimated to campus and build friendships.Students are really looking forward to our Big Breakfast and Bingo on Friday night and our super bowl party on Sunday, among other events. A lot of our new transfer students enjoy Tuesday mornings because Off-Campus Student Services hosts a warm delicious breakfast. A fun new activity taking over campus this week is #UMBCsquirrles.
#UMBCsquirrels will connect our students this first week through the art of memes. They are tasked with creating illustrations and memes of what the squirrels think and do around campus. I can’t wait to see what our students create!
Our admissions office is happy to have students back on campus. With the new semester, our counselors are busy reading fall applications and planning our spring travel. We cannot wait to have all of you on campus next year!
Today I am going to highlight our winter semester. UMBC never stops moving. Not only do we offer courses in the fall and spring but also in the winter and summer.
The winter semester is helpful for incoming transfer students and freshman to get acclimated to campus. Take a course to lighten your spring class schedule or complete a prerequisite. In our winter term, we offer over 100 courses that can be online, in person or hybrid classes. Don’t worry you still get to enjoy the holiday break. The semester does not start until January 30th!
The campus continues to stay busy with activities for our winter semester students. A few activities happening this month are canvas painting, hot chocolate drinking and donut decorating. I hope you consider this option when you are a retriever!
I am very excited to introduce myself to you all on our blog! My name is Elizabeth Davis and I am our newest Admissions Counselor here in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. The past seven months have flown by and been filled with excitement. I spent the fall traveling around New Jersey, Pennsylvania and western Maryland meeting wonderful future retrievers. I attended over 100 high schools and got to do some sight-seeing. Recently, I have had the pleasure of reading applications and was impressed with our applicant pool. You all rock!
After a busy fall, I am happy to wind down and tell you a little bit about me!
I am Maryland, born and raised. Old bay, steamed crabs, Ravens and Orioles are just a few of my favorite things. I am always filled with energy and wearing a big smile. I grew up on a dairy farm in Carroll County and studied dairy science in college. Cows are great at cuddling, looking cute and being the best animals around. Milk and parmesan cheese are my favorite drink & food.
I just moved to Baltimore City to live with my sister. The best part about the city are our sports team. There is nothing sweeter than Camden yards on a summer night and a Ravens win on Sunday afternoon. I am very close with my family and friends. I am so lucky to be roommates with my sister and have our friends within walking distance.
As a recent graduate, I can say to all of our future retrievers welcome to the best four years. The academics, extracurriculars, and friendships will last a lifetime.I love my job because everyday I get to help students start their college journey.
I hope you enjoyed reading all about me! I’ll be posting again soon so stay tuned!
