There are so many things to look forward to as we begin the month of February- The Superbowl, Valentine’s Day, and UMBC’s FAFSA deadline!
Whether you have applied to UMBC as a freshman back in October or you are a transfer student who intends to apply within the coming weeks, your FAFSA must be submitted by Valentine’s Day- February 14th.
FAFSA which stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step in making sure that you are considered for financial aid at UMBC. For an explanation of the types of aid that you may receive at UMBC, visit our Financial Aid and Scholarships website here. While you are exploring the site, don’t forget to check out UMBC’s cost calculator. Even if you are in the early stages of figuring out how to pay for college, this tool will provide you with some useful insights on the cost of earning a degree at UMBC.
Over these next two weeks, familiarize yourself with these resources and remember… Apply online by Valentine’s Day!
Hello from the Garden State!
We are just about half way through our busy travel season where we leave UMBC behind to visit high schools near and far and meet with our future Retrievers.
Hopefully you’ve gotten your first glimpse of UMBC from our admissions team at a high school visit or college fair. So what’s next? In addition to conquering the Common Application (November 1st will be here soon), plan a trip to visit us on campus for one of our admissions events!
Below are two programs that we’ve created just for you.
RETRIEVER VISIT DAYS
Is UMBC the school for me? Come find out at our Retriever Visit Days! This program will get you on campus, in the classroom, and pumped about the possibility of becoming a UMBC student.
Monday, November 11th
Friday, December 6th
STEM SCHOLARS PREVIEW DAY
Are you serious about STEM? Considering applying to one of UMBC’s Scholars programs for students who are interested in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math? UMBC’s CWIT, Cyber, Meyerhoff and Sherman Scholars programs will be hosting a STEM Scholars Preview Day on Monday, November 4th.
Visit the CWIT website for more information on how to SIGN UP for this can’t – miss event!
See you on campus soon!
It’s been almost a week since my extended Memorial Day vacation ended. After spending the past two weeks on the picture-perfect beaches of Hawaii, I’m ready for summer. Though I’m slightly depressed that I won’t be waking up every morning and climbing mountains that overlook the crystal-clear Pacific, I’m super excited that ORIENTATION IS LESS THAN ONE WEEK AWAY!
(Not a postcard) Took this gem myself!
Yes, this is one of our favorite times of the year as we get to reconnect with the favorite familiar faces of our incoming students and your families. We’ve read your applications, welcomed you to our community at New Student Day and now you officially begin the next chapter of your life as a UMBC Retriever at orientation.
For those of you who still haven’t signed up, time is ticking away and we wouldn’t want you to miss out on this great opportunity to get to know your future classmates and select your courses for the fall. You’ll meet with our OPA’s , take your first crack at belting out our fight song, and if you so choose, leave the day with a souvenir to commemorate your experience!
If you’re reading this thinking that orientation sounds fun but you can’t wait until September to begin your UMBC experience, check out our Freshman Excursion. Complete with campfires, caving, and plenty of time to connect with your future classmates and some of the coolest people at UMBC (our orientation staff), this will be an experience that you will not forget. This three day program runs from July 23rd– July 25th and spots are filling up quick!
For information on how to sign up for these experiences visit our orientation site here!
See you soon!
After a crazy fall of making nice with the New Jersey Turnpike, traveling from NJ, to PA to Baltimore and back for seven weeks straight, I am very happy to be back at UMBC. Now that I’m in the office what have I been up to? Reading, Reading and oh yes…more reading applications. With Christmas music on and coffee in hand, I’m spending my days sifting through essay after essay getting to know our future Retrievers. This is definitely one of my favorite times of the year!
One of the more popular essay topics I have come across this year is CHANGE. Whether it’s the anticipation of transitioning from high school to college, moving to another town, meeting new people or experiencing new challenges, times of change can be some of the most exciting times in our lives.
Joining the UMBC community in August was just the first in a long list of changes that I have experienced over the last four months. Moving to Baltimore from New Jersey, finding a new place to live, getting engaged, attending my first UMBC Visit Day, watching the Backstreet Boys and New Kids On the Block perform live , and discovering new places in my travels to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and my new home in Baltimore are just a few of the highlights- pictures are below!
Nothing about my life is the same as it was in August… Is that scary? Absolutely, but in the midst of all of these changes have been so many great experiences that have made adjusting to a new life in Baltimore so much fun.
UMBC offers opportunities to help our future students enjoy the transition from high school to college. Whether it’s attending a Visit Day or getting an inside look at life at UMBC from a current student while they are “Home For The Holidays”, there are so many great experiences to be had while learning more about our UMBC community.
You may not have made that big change yet, but when you are ready to dive into your college search process, or figure out which school you are attending next fall we are always happy to help you out… And we are only a click away!
