Early Action Letter Drop!

Image

My favorite time of year is here! The moment all of my aspiring Retrievers have been waiting for!

(inserts drumroll)

We are excited to announce that at approximately 3 pm yesterday afternoon, Early Action decision letters were released!

img_4919

I want to thank you all for all of your hard work, not only submitting all of your materials by the Early Action deadline of November 1st but for doing well your entire educational career to get you prepared for this moment.

This year we had nearly 6,000 Early Action applicants! I  also want to thank our admissions staff for diligently and relentlessly reviewing every completed application file.We appreciate how patient you all have been and the wait is now over!

There are two possible decisions you can receive in the mail and I will expand on exactly what they mean:

  1. Early Action

Congratulations! It is a wonderful experience to receive admission to a college or university, and even more exciting if this is your first decision letter.

Your admissions packet contains a wealth of information about UMBC, Orientation, Student Life, and Living on Campus. Please review each section of the packet. During the spring season, we will be hosting various events, both on and off campus, for newly admitted students. Be on the look-out for those dates in the near future!

You will have until May 1st to submit your enrollment deposit so you have some time to decide on the best fit institution for you. Please contact our office if you have any questions in the meantime.

  1. Deferred

For Early Action review, in addition to offers of admission, we send notifications that an application has been deferred to Regular Decision for further consideration. This does not mean you have not been admitted! If you receive a deferral letter, do not be discouraged. This year we had an influx of applications, making Our Early Action review even more competitive. We will begin sending Regular Decision letters in late February. As always, please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions!

Once again, thank you for all of your applications! We truly enjoyed reading them and getting to learn a little more about our future Retrievers!

We encourage you to share your excitement with family, friends, and on social media using our hashtag #UMBCadmit! You never know, you might see yourself on one of our social media accounts. Be sure to follow us @UMBCadmissions!

Birthdays and Retriever Days!

That’s right everyone. Today we celebrate UMBC’s 50th birthday!

On September 19th, 1966 UMBC first opened its doors to its first students and it has been such a wonderful 50 years for our amazing institution. This past weekend was the 50th celebration weekend that we had been preparing for and it couldn’t have been any better! From reunions and food, to fireworks and puppies. Yes, puppies! See Pictures here 🙂

Even though this birthday weekend has passed, that does not mean we are done celebrating! This is a year-long celebration and all students, staff, and faculty will continue to share the awesomeness that is UMBC with you all!

One way to experience all that UMBC has to offer is by coming to our first Retriever Day of the Fall! This Saturday, September 24th, 2016 we are hosting our Saturday Retriever Day.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about UMBC, tour our campus, chat with members of our community, and much more.

You can register online by visiting: http://undergraduate.umbc.edu/visit.

Hope to see you there!! 🙂

We’re Coming to Your City!

Cue Big and Rich music.

That’s right! The UMBC admissions counselors are back on the road. For my part, I’ll be travelling in Connecticut, New York, and Delaware out of state and Harford and Carroll Counties in state.

Make sure to check your high school guidance counselor to see when we will be visiting! Also make sure to check local college fairs before you head out to make sure you don’t miss us.

We can’t wait to bring UMBC to YOU!

UMBC is One of the Top DAWGS in the Nation!

UMBC has been selected again by the Princeton Review as one of the nation’s top universities for undergraduate education, featured in its flagship guide, The Best 381 Colleges. Within the 2017 guide, UMBC’s profile highlights the strength of a UMBC education and the university’s commitment to student success with a brilliant location, due to its close proximity to Baltimore and Washington, DC.

If you would like to read more about UMBC being one of the top dawgs in the nation, please click here.

It’s great to be a RETRIEVER!!!

Getting Ready!

We are officially in the middle of August which means school will be starting again very soon! I’m sure for most of you, this is a bitter sweet feeling.

For those of you who are about to start your senior year of high school, congrats! There are many great things that you have to look forward to during the next year.

One of the many things are…COLLEGE APPS!

And in even more exciting news, our application is live on Common App! This means you are able to go online to commonapp.org and create an account to begin your application.

I welcome all of you to begin this process sooner rather than later. Our Early Action deadline of November 1st will be here before you know it and you don’t want to get stuck last minute with many things to do.

Starting your application now also gives you plenty of time to work on your essay (See Christine’s Post on what to write in your college essay) and have it reviewed by a teacher or counselor. And if you haven’t already done so, start thinking of whom you’d like to write letters of recommendation on your behalf.

If you have any questions about the application process, don’t hesitate to contact our office and ask to speak to a counselor! You can reach us at 410-455-2292 or at admissions@umbc.edu. We also offer walk-in hours Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., no appointment needed!

Worried About How to Write Your College Essay? We Have Your Back!

The reason colleges and universities require students to write an essay for their admission application is for us to get to know who you are. We want to know what your values are, what your preferred learning style is, and what you would bring to a community of learners.  An essay displays your personality, provides admissions representative insight beyond your grades, and helps determine if you as an applicant will “fit” into our institution’s community.

Here’s exactly what we look for:

  1. Grammar and punctuation

Proof reading is key!

  1. Clear and concise

Please don’t write us a two page essay…:)

  1. Who is this applicant?

Be UNIQUE, be YOU!

Remember to start early by researching your topic, complete an outline and rough draft, develop three parts (introduction, body, conclusion), be specific, get creative, be honest, and edit! Also, don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from your peers, friends, and/or mentors.

I hope this helps make the essay writing process better for all of my Future Retrievers! As always, get the latest news from the Undergraduate Admissions Office by following our social media accounts @UMBCadmissions!!!

And The Award Goes To…

UMBC!

We have had an amazing summer so far and we hope you have been too! UMBC has been in the news quite a few times recently including recognition as a top 100 public university from both Money Magazine and Forbes. Money Magazine made note of UMBC’s impressive 50 year record in their College Planner notes. They went even further naming UMBC one of the top three public universities in Maryland! There’s something to celebrate.

Forbes had a number of accolades on their Top Colleges list including the recognition of UMBC as the #6 mid-sized public college and a #134 top research universities nationwide.

Time Higher Education named UMBC one of the world’s top young universities for a fifth time in April. Add in UMBC appearances in the Princeton Review’s 2016 “Colleges that Pay You Back” Guide and the 2017 Fiske Guide to Colleges for students’ access to academic and social resources!

UMBC was also just named a “Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education, one of only 80 universities on the list. What we are trying to say is that from the students to the faculty and staff, UMBC is really topping the list!
