There are so many things to look forward to as we begin the month of February- The Superbowl, Valentine’s Day, and UMBC’s FAFSA deadline!
Whether you have applied to UMBC as a freshman back in October or you are a transfer student who intends to apply within the coming weeks, your FAFSA must be submitted by Valentine’s Day- February 14th.
FAFSA which stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the first step in making sure that you are considered for financial aid at UMBC. For an explanation of the types of aid that you may receive at UMBC, visit our Financial Aid and Scholarships website here. While you are exploring the site, don’t forget to check out UMBC’s cost calculator. Even if you are in the early stages of figuring out how to pay for college, this tool will provide you with some useful insights on the cost of earning a degree at UMBC.
Over these next two weeks, familiarize yourself with these resources and remember… Apply online by Valentine’s Day!
The May 1 enrollment deadline for freshmen passed last week and we’re looking forward to meeting our new students this summer during Orientation! But here in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation we also have the pleasure of working with transfer students. We like transfer students so much that we even have our very own Transfer Coordinator! Who has her own blog! The great news for our prospective transfer students is that it is not too late to apply for the fall 2011 term.
The deadline for transfer student will be coming up in a few weeks- May 31 to be specific. To apply as a transfer student you will need to submit the Undergraduate degree-seeking application (and $50 application fee) and your official college transcripts (from ALL previous colleges you’ve attended). We also require official high school transcripts and SAT and/or ACT scores for transfer student who have earned fewer than 30 college credits. When reviewing applications for transfer student the Admission staff will be evaluating a student’s overall academic record. This includes considering your grades, GPA, curriculum and trends.
For some students who have already applied we will wait for your spring grades before making a decision. If you fall into this scenario simply send an updated official transcript once you have finished your semester.
As always, feel free to contact our office if you have questions. If you’ve applied you can also check your myUMBC account to verify that your application is complete. However, please allow time for our office to process the documents you send. On a final note, once you finish reading this post, get the heck outside! It’s gorgeous 🙂
If you are a transfer student considering UMBC for the upcoming Fall 2010 semester we just want to remind you that the final deadline to apply is May 31, 2010. In order to apply you will need to submit your application online, pay the $50 application fee and send official college transcripts from all previous colleges/universities you have attended. Additionally, if you have earned fewer than 30 college credits when you submit your application we also ask that you send your official high school transcripts and SAT and/or ACT scores. When the Admissions Committee reviews a transfer application we will be looking at your past academic record including your grades, curriculum, trends on your transcripts and overall GPA. Additional information can be found here: http://www.umbc.edu/undergraduate/apply_now/transfer.html
For students who have already submitted an application, you can expect an official decision letter in the mail about 2-3 weeks from the time an application becomes complete in our office. If you have already applied please be sure to use your myUMBC account to check the status of your application. If you have already been offered admission for the Fall term make sure you have signed up for Orientation and please send your final transcripts when you have finished your semester.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office. Thanks!
When the Admissions Counselors are on the road during this time of year we are often focused on meeting with students interested in next Fall. Meanwhile we leave the other UMBC Admissions staff back in the office to run the show, and among the many things they do to keep things operating smoothly is working with our Spring 2010 applicants. The deadlines for Spring transfer applicants are coming up as quickly as the deadline for Fall 2010 applicants. In fact, the Priority deadline for the Spring 2010 semester is November 1! The same day as our Fall 2010 Early Action deadline! Crazy! Of course we also have a December 15 Regular Decision deadline for the Spring 2010 semester, but for full scholarship consideration it is recommended that transfer students apply by the November 1 Priority deadline. More information about applying can be found here.
If you are a student who updated your application to the Spring 2010 term from the Fall 2009 term and we will be waiting for your Fall 2009 grades to make a decision, please send your transcripts once they are available. We understand that often your transcripts are not available until after the December 15 deadline but as long as we have your other materials your application will still be considered for the Spring.
For those who have already applied for the Spring semester and completed your applications you can expect to hear from our office soon. We will be sending out our first batch of Spring decision letters shortly so keep your eye on those mailboxes.
On another note, be sure to check out our UMBC student bloggers: http://umbcretrievers.wordpress.com/
The deadline for transfer students recently passed (May 31) but the Admissions Office is still accepting applications on a space available basis. Check out Kelly’s post on the Transfer blog for details.
In other news, I will be away from the office for the next couple of weeks enjoying a little vacation time. Don’t fret however, Laura and Ryan will still be going strong here at the Counselors’ blog. Have a great weekend!
I’ve spent a lot of hours over the past few months reviewing applications for students who are interested in UMBC. I have looked at more high school transcripts than I can count. I’ve seen SAT scores, letters of recommendation and essays as far as the eye can see. However, with the passing of our Regular Decision deadline, I am beginning to see more applications for transfer students. You may already be aware, but UMBC has a substantial transfer population. I’ve mentioned in a previous posting that approximately 1, 100 transfer students begin at UMBC each year.
If you are interested in applying to UMBC as a transfer student it is not too late (nor is it too early). UMBC has two deadlines for transfer students; a March 15th deadline (priority), and a May 31st deadline. In order to apply as a transfer student you must submit a transfer application, pay the $50 application fee, and submit official college transcripts from all previous post-secondary institutions. We also ask that students who have earned less than 30 college credits at the time of applying submit their official high school transcripts and SAT and/or ACT scores.
“How many credits do I need before I can transfer?” Great question! We allow students to transfer to UMBC after just one full time semester at another institution. If you have at least 14 transferable college credits (academic classes at the 100-level or higher) you can be considered a transfer student. We also typically like to see that transfer students have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA in their college coursework.
Valentines Day is also coming up soon and while that may mean chocolates and stuffed bears to some, here at UMBC it means business. Okay, well Valentines Day might mean chocolate for some here at UMBC, but it is also the day the FAFSA is due. Even though our deadline for transfer students is later in the semester, I suggest submitting your FAFSA to UMBC now if you want to be considered for need-based aid.
As always, feel free to let us know if you have questions. Have a great weekend!
Just an FYI that I have updated the Transfer Advising Days page with the Spring 2009 dates. Kelly will be making her rounds to the Maryland two-year institutions so feel free to stop by and ask her questions about transferring to UMBC.
Check back soon, I’ll also be updating the College Fair page.
Just a quick reminder that if you are interested in applying for the Spring 2009 semester the deadline is Monday, December 15. Information on applying as a transfer student can be found on the Undergraduate website. If you are applying as a transfer and need to wait for your Fall 2008 grades, please make sure to at least submit the application by December 15th. If your grades won’t be available until after December 15 that is fine, simply send your transcripts as soon as possible. If you have already been admitted for the Spring 2009 semester and plan to attend UMBC please make sure to submit your Enrollment Deposit and Orienation cards.
For more information on transferring to UMBC check out Kelly’s blog and our transfer website. Thanks!
Happy Friday! I’m not sure how you all feel, but the Spring semester felt like it went by really quickly. With the end of the Spring semester also came another marker here at UMBC…the deadline for transfer students to apply for Fall 2008! Hopefully everyone got those applications in on time, but you may also be asking, “Can I still send in my other materials?” Well of course you can! The “other materials” I am talking about include official college transcripts (from all previous college institutions you have attended), essays (not required but you are welcome to send them in), letters of recommendation (also not required), and official high school transcripts and official SAT and/or ACT scores (if you have earned under 30 credits of college coursework).
Transcripts are the big item that we need from transfer students. For those of you who applied and have already been accepted I want to remind you to send in final transcript for the Spring semester. This is very important because without those final grades, we can’t evaluate the class for transferability. For those who have applied and not yet heard back from us, make sure you are sending all those transcripts! And I really do mean ALL of the transcripts. Even if you only have one class from a school and you’re not worried about transferring that class, we still need a transcript! Once we get all those credentials we need from you we’ll get a decision on your application and send you an official decision letter in the mail.
Have a great weekend! Take care, and remember, send those transcripts!
