We are really looking forward to our upcoming class of Retrievers! We can’t wait to add your talent and ambition to our campus. Did you know as an admitted student you can take a summer course or participate in our summer bridge program? In addition to orientation, you can sign up for an excursion! Spend a day in Baltimore or a few days in the mountains with your future classmates! Excursion sign ups are located within orientation sign up! Lastly, find out your house of grit! Take our quiz to see if you are a maker, explorer, thinker, uniter or solver.

Congratulations Class of 2021!

Following May 1st, we want to welcome and congratulate the incoming Retriever Class of 2021!

opas-updated

You all put in a tremendous amount of work throughout high school and we could not be more excited to start working with you!

Next on your checklist to UMBC should be orientation. Orientation is an incredibly important event in your college transition. It will help you get in touch with other new Retrievers, the UMBC campus community, and get you in contact with campus life and academic resources. One of the most important pieces of your orientation will be registering for your fall classes! An academic advisor will help you in a one-on-one setting to ensure you start on the right path to graduation from day one.

If you have not already registered for orientation, you can do it right now on your computer! All you have to do is visit http://orientation.umbc.edu/ and pick a day that works for you. While you are there, check the “Before Orientation” tab to make sure you are all ready to go on once you arrive. This could include ensuring you have already completed placement testing, sent us any advanced credit scores (like AP testing) from high school, and collecting any miscellaneous paperwork that is needed like health forms.

If you need any help, feel free to call our office or send us an email. We can’t wait to see you this summer!

Welcome Back!

The shining sun and cool air greeted our students on their first day of classes, today. Winter break has ended and it is time for our old and new students to get started on their next semester.

Although classes are back in session, that doesn’t mean the fun of winter break has ended. We kick off each semester with Welcome Week. Welcome week is filled with games, activities, and socials so our new students can get acclimated to campus and build friendships.Students are really looking forward to our Big Breakfast and Bingo on Friday night and our super bowl party on Sunday, among other events. A lot of our new transfer students enjoy Tuesday mornings because Off-Campus Student Services hosts a warm delicious breakfast. A fun new activity taking over campus this week is #UMBCsquirrles.

#UMBCsquirrels will connect our students this first week through the art of memes. They are tasked with creating illustrations and memes of what the squirrels think and do around campus. I can’t wait to see what our students create!

Our admissions office is happy to have students back on campus. With the new semester, our counselors are busy reading fall applications and planning our spring travel. We cannot wait to have all of you on campus next year!

Early Action Letter Drop!

Image

My favorite time of year is here! The moment all of my aspiring Retrievers have been waiting for!

(inserts drumroll)

We are excited to announce that at approximately 3 pm yesterday afternoon, Early Action decision letters were released!

img_4919

I want to thank you all for all of your hard work, not only submitting all of your materials by the Early Action deadline of November 1st but for doing well your entire educational career to get you prepared for this moment.

This year we had nearly 6,000 Early Action applicants! I  also want to thank our admissions staff for diligently and relentlessly reviewing every completed application file.We appreciate how patient you all have been and the wait is now over!

There are two possible decisions you can receive in the mail and I will expand on exactly what they mean:

  1. Early Action

Congratulations! It is a wonderful experience to receive admission to a college or university, and even more exciting if this is your first decision letter.

img_0867 img_0869

Your admissions packet contains a wealth of information about UMBC, Orientation, Student Life, and Living on Campus. Please review each section of the packet. During the spring season, we will be hosting various events, both on and off campus, for newly admitted students. Be on the look-out for those dates in the near future!

You will have until May 1st to submit your enrollment deposit so you have some time to decide on the best fit institution for you. Please contact our office if you have any questions in the meantime.

  1. Deferred

For Early Action review, in addition to offers of admission, we send notifications that an application has been deferred to Regular Decision for further consideration. This does not mean you have not been admitted! If you receive a deferral letter, do not be discouraged. This year we had an influx of applications, making Our Early Action review even more competitive. We will begin sending Regular Decision letters in late February. As always, please feel free to contact our office if you have any questions!

Once again, thank you for all of your applications! We truly enjoyed reading them and getting to learn a little more about our future Retrievers!

We encourage you to share your excitement with family, friends, and on social media using our hashtag #UMBCadmit! You never know, you might see yourself on one of our social media accounts. Be sure to follow us @UMBCadmissions!

Birthdays and Retriever Days!

That’s right everyone. Today we celebrate UMBC’s 50th birthday!

On September 19th, 1966 UMBC first opened its doors to its first students and it has been such a wonderful 50 years for our amazing institution. This past weekend was the 50th celebration weekend that we had been preparing for and it couldn’t have been any better! From reunions and food, to fireworks and puppies. Yes, puppies! See Pictures here 🙂

Even though this birthday weekend has passed, that does not mean we are done celebrating! This is a year-long celebration and all students, staff, and faculty will continue to share the awesomeness that is UMBC with you all!

One way to experience all that UMBC has to offer is by coming to our first Retriever Day of the Fall! This Saturday, September 24th, 2016 we are hosting our Saturday Retriever Day.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about UMBC, tour our campus, chat with members of our community, and much more.

You can register online by visiting: http://undergraduate.umbc.edu/visit.

Hope to see you there!! 🙂

We’re Coming to Your City!

Cue Big and Rich music.

That’s right! The UMBC admissions counselors are back on the road. For my part, I’ll be travelling in Connecticut, New York, and Delaware out of state and Harford and Carroll Counties in state.

Make sure to check your high school guidance counselor to see when we will be visiting! Also make sure to check local college fairs before you head out to make sure you don’t miss us.

We can’t wait to bring UMBC to YOU!

It’s Time to Hit the Road!!!

Hello Future Retrievers,

It’s the time of year where I will be hitting the road again. There have been a few changes in my territory assignments, and I will no longer be traveling to Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I won’t be able to walk through Kobe Bryant’s shrine at Lower Merion High School nor will I leisurely be able to walk on Princeton’s campus and feel like I’m at Hogwarts (secretly hoping I would run into Harry Potter).

img_4982img_5057

But, I am truly excited about my new territories! If you are a student attending a school in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and Baltimore County you might see me walking down your hall ways or at your local/regional college fair. Feel free to sign up and come chat with me about ALL the possibilities you could have as a Retriever if you see our UMBC poster hanging in your school’s Guidance Office/ College Career Center.

I can’t wait for this new adventure, and I hope to see you all soon!!!

Follow us on our social media accounts @UMBCadmissions to see what‘s going on with the UMBC Admissions Counselors while we are on the road!
