November is coming!

Good evening, everyone! I’m now working my way up the coast and visiting the beautiful (albeit rainy) Eastern Shore of Maryland. I’ve been talking to a lot of seniors, and I know you all have one thing on your mind: APPLICATIONS! It may be difficult to remember all of the different dates, so let me remind you of ours.

November 1 is our Early Action deadline for fall 2012. It’s non-binding, so there’s no risk in applying that early, and you get priority scholarship consideration. You’ll also meet the deadlines for our scholars programs and the Honors College if you apply by November 1. Our Early Action applicants receive a decision before the winter holidays. And finally, if we are not able to completely review your application based on what you’ve submitted for Early Action, we can hold off to receive your first semester senior year grades and any additional SAT or ACTs you may have taken.

November 1 is also the priority deadline for our spring 2012 applicants. I cannot impress upon you enough: apply early, by November 1!

    • Diana, I checked the Honors College website and the essay should be about 800 words. The smaller writing pieces on your interests and activities should be a “full paragraph.” Hope that helps!

    I am graduating from Montgomery College with a A.A. this semester(Fall 2011) and completed my application for Spring 2012 last friday(10/14). I currently have 2.4 GPA and doing pretty well this semester so far but was wondering if I have a chance to get in? When would I find out my decision? I want to major in Biological Sciences and did majority of the classes requested from artsys. Thanks for the help!

    I am a student at Montgomery College and upon successful completion of this semester I would be graduating with an A.A. in general studies. I applied for the Spring 2012 semester last friday(10/14) but am worried about not getting admitted. I have a 2.4 GPA currently and I want to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Do I have a shot of getting admitted? When would I find out my decision?

    • Hi Ian,

      We generally look for transfer students to have about a B or 3.0 average, especially if they want to major in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). If you have received an AA degree from a Maryland community college and have received a GPA of at least a 2.0, we will be able to admit you. But again, for your intended major I would recommend working on raising your GPA this semester. Shoot for a total of at least a 2.5, preferably higher.

      • Thanks for the help. I do have one more question. I am taking organic chemistry 1 and calculus 1 this semester but was wondering if I need to complete the second part of those courses at MC before transferring? also if I did apply on 10/17 when would I find a decision? Late november?early december? Thanks again!

      • Ian, I don’t believe that you need to take the second part of those courses to transfer. Depending on what level you took at MC, you may need to start at a different level. If you are admitted, that is one of the things you will be discussing with your advisor.

        And we will mailing decisions beginning in the middle of December. You can also track the status of your applications online through your myUMBC account.

  4. Hi Scott,

    I am currently trying to get school forms in on time for the early action plan for UMBC. I have a couple of questions.

    I have all of the application/supplement/payments submitted on CommonApp.org, but my school uses Naviance and I am worried about the transcript requests getting processed on time. If the transcript misses the deadline, do I have to reapply for the regular decision period?

    Also, how does UMBC admissions look at advanced Magnet Programs? I am a member of the Anne Arundel County’s STEM program, which focuses in the STEM subjects, and requires a heavy AP course load.

    • Tristan,

      You wouldn’t have to reapply for regular decision, we would keep your application open and wait to review it until we receive all of your materials. I wouldn’t worry, though; the CommonApp is pretty easy to use and your counselor should just be able to upload it directly online before November 1.

      In addition to your SAT score and GPA, we take into account everything else that you send to us, including your essay, letters of recommendation, and the rigor of your curriculum in high school. So your program looks good on your application. Because of the way we process applications, no one thing will guarantee you or deny your admission.
